Tell me about an inspiring woman in your life!

This International Women's Day I'd like to hear about a woman that has inspired you in your life.

This International Women's Day I'd like to hear about a woman that has inspired you in your life.

To get you started, let me tell you about a woman that played an important role in getting me to where I am today!

Sheri Benson and Barb Byers

Barb Byers, CLC Vice President, YWCA Woman of Distinction, and Member of the Order of Canada is one of the women who inspired me in my life.

And for one main reason… Barb always welcomed and encouraged me to lead.

I remember during my early days of being a union activist (too many years ago to mention), Barb was retiring from her leadership role in my union to throw her hat in the ring to be the President of the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour.

I have never forgotten when she turned to me and said:  “Sheri, why don’t you run for union president.”  I thought, Whaaat!?  Are you crazy!  And I didn’t throw my hat in the ring THAT TIME!

But I never forgot her words.  They stayed with me.  They were like a little voice that grew louder and louder saying, I think I can I think I can.

Barb’s early vote of confidence for my leadership gave me my confidence to eventually step into leadership roles later in life.   She was one of the women in my life who helped me see myself as a Member of Parliament one day!

Oh… and she stayed goofy and fun and I admire folks that stay who they are regardless of the accolades!

Thanks Barb.
