NDP Stands Up For Children's Safety

Sask NDP MPs Georgina Jolibois and Sheri Benson are raising major concerns over a 2010 Transport Canada report that revealed that school buses failed safety tests and failed to prevent serious injuries.

Saskatchewan’s NDP MPs Georgina Jolibois (Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River) and Sheri Benson (Saskatoon West) are raising major concerns over a 2010 Transport Canada report that revealed that school buses failed safety tests and failed to prevent serious injuries. This information was kept from Canadians for a whopping eight years, meaning both the previous Conservative and the current Liberal governments failed to inform the public about the safety hazards to children outlined in the report.

“It’s inconceivable for the government to withhold such important findings from Canadians. In the last eight years, families have been putting their children on school buses, trusting they would arrive to school safely,” said Benson. “Parents and communities depend on this kind of information to make sure their children are safe and that the services they rely on are safe.”

The report talked about the need for serious consideration of installing seatbelts in school buses. The fact that this Transport Canada report was uncovered by the media and not released by the government after such a long period of time raises serious concerns about the lack of transparency around issues that advance road safety.

“The government must give us assurance that they will be transparent with Canadians on the safety of their children and that immediate action will be taken to ensure the utmost security for our kids. They deserve better protection. Families need to know their kids are safe,” stressed Jolibois.
