Everyone Deserves a Safe Place to Call Home

Instead the Sask Party govt has removed a program that helps low income families and those with disabilities afford their rent.

Sign the petition at https://www.saskndp.ca/rental_housing_supplement to reverse the heartless cut to the Rental Housing Supplement.

As of July 1 2018, the Saskatchewan Rental Housing Supplement is no longer accepting new applications and those that are already receiving it are at risk of losing it if they move or their circumstances change.

Under the program, a family with one to two children living in Saskatoon or Regina received a maximum supplement of $305 per month, while a single person received a maximum disability supplement of $262 per month.

The Sask Party Government claimed that this money would be replaced by a Federal housing benefit , but the federal government's program will not be launched until 2020, after the next federal election and 2 years after cancelling the provincial program.

For Roberta and other people in similar situations, finding a good place to live that they can afford is tough and the rental supplement helped, it helped a lot. For a lot of people, it was the difference between having a place to live and not having a place to live.

In addition, the province's affordable housing providers, great nonprofits like Quint Development Corp, CUMFI, Camponi Housing and many others built their business plans and set their rents based on the understanding that their renters would be receiving the rental housing benefit. Now these affordable housing units are no longer affordable.

Please sign the petition or call, email or phone your MLA to ask that the Rental Supplement be reinstated. The way you end homelessness is by providing people with a safe place that they can afford to live, a home.
