Bring Back CRA Counter Services
Due to changes made by the Conservatives in 2012 and 2013, all CRA counter service counters were closed across Canada. This resulted in the elimination of 283 positions and the Canadian public can now only access the CRA via online communications or by phone through call centres.
This disproportionately affects seniors, people with disabilities, low-income and new Canadians who have limited or no access to the internet.
Call Centres have been overwhelmed with phone calls and there are not enough staff to keep up with the demand.
A 2017 Auditor General’s Report found that only 1/3 of calls made to the call centre were answered and more than half of approximately 28 million calls were blocked.
Canadians are not getting the service they need in person or over the phone. CRA counter services should be re-opened to the public.
